Women have always been seen at a disadvantage to men in the workforce. However women are not always at the bottom of the totem pole. Here are 17 women who have beaten odds, worked hard and showed that women sometimes are better at what they do. All of the following women are CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies.

Mary Barra is the CEO of General Motors which is ranked number 7 on the Fortune 500. Not only is she CEO of a major corporation she is CEO of a car company which is typically seen as a man’s realm. This is one woman that doesn’t take no for an answer and Forbes ranks her as one of the most powerful women in the world.

Meg Whitman is the CEO of Hewlitt-Packard which is ranked 17th in the Fortune 500. She has worked at companies like EBay, DreamWorks, Procter and Gamble and Hasbro. She is also on the Forbes list as one of the Most Powerful Women in the World. She is also known for her political ambitions as she ran for California governor in 2010. She lost but still remains a loud voice in the politics of California.

Virginia Rometty is CEO of IBM which is ranked 23rd on the Fortune 500. She is the first female to ever hold the position and she is considered one of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business byFortune magazine, earning the #1 spot in 2012. She is also ranked 10th on the Forbes list of the 100 Most Powerful Women.

Patricia A. Woertz is the CEO of Arthur Daniels Midland Company which is ranked 27th on the Fortune 500. She has held the position since 2007 and ranks 85th on the Forbes list of the 100 Most Powerful Women. She has shown just how good she is at her job because 2014 has been the best year in the company’s history.

Indra K. Nooyi is perhaps the most refreshing woman on the list because she is the CEO of PepsiCo which is 43rd on the Fortune 500 list. PepsiCo is the second largest food and beverage business in the world by revenue which means that Indra K. Nooyi is a very powerful woman. She is ranked 13th on the Forbes list of 100 Most Powerful Women. She has previously been listed as one of Time’s Most Influential People in the World.

Definitely not a woman you want to make angry Marillyn Hewson is CEO of Lockheed Martin which is ranked 59th on the Fortune 500. Still relatively new to her position with just becoming CEO in 2013 but she is ranked as the 21st Most Powerful Woman in the World by Forbes. She worked her way up through the ranks of Lockheed Martin spending more than 30 years with the company.

Ellen J. Kullman is CEO of DuPont which is ranked 86th on the Fortune 500 list. She is the first woman to lead the company in its 206 year history. She is a former director of General Motors and she is ranked 31st on the Forbes list of powerful women. She is also chair of the U.S. China Business Council.

Irene Rosenfeld is CEO of Mondelez International which ranks 89th on the Fortune 500. As CEO of a $31 billion dollar international snacking company ( responsible for treats like Oreos and Trident Gum) she places 15th on the Forbes list of powerful women.
